Wednesday started with an early morning ice storm and I was planning on working from home. Having a laptop has pros and cons and a pro is not having to drive to work in bad weather. The con: there are no snow days, I just get to work in jammies. I was 15 minutes to into my work day when the power went out. I had to text my boss to tell her and I did not have time to set an out of office so I was basically MIA to everyone emailing me. I was also making breakfast when it went out but we have a propane stove so I was good to cook. By candle and lantern light because my kitchen window is gone. It worked and the bacon was delicious.
I played some games with Baylor and while we were playing Chuggington Memory I heard a tree crack and it sounded close. I looked out the side window and saw a branch had fallen on Doug's new to him truck. I threw on some shoes and a coat and ran over to tell him. They had heard the noise but thought it was ice sliding off their smokehouse, the red building beside the truck. Their house is nearly 100 years old and they have the smokehouse and barn on their property. The branch really missed doing any damage to the truck, it just layed across the windshield and over the side.
While we were waiting for them to come out Baylor and I walked around our yard to see if we had any damage. The curly willow has several broken branches that we will need to take care of later but other than that, just a lot of pretty ice covering things.
Monday's storm I had made a snow pile for Baylor to play on. It was now crusty, crunchy, and icy. But he did not mind it.
We had to clean off the front porch for Eddy so she did not slip and slide coming out of the house.
It took some time but we were able to remove all the side branches and cut down the big branch. The kids took most of the small branches to the wood pile, using their sleds for assistance. We did lose them to playing but they are kids and were having fun together. The neighbor on the other side came over and I joked it was a Winter miracle, I am seeing both of my neighbors and it was not even Spring. We say goodbye in the Fall and do not expect to see anyone until the weather warms up. We do not have sidewalks in town and everyone stays at home when the weather is cold.
Doug was able to cut if down right at the break on the tree and the rest of the wood was piled up. We went home and changed with a promise to come over and warm up by their wood stove. Baylor would not stop asking to go over to play so we did. We ended up staying for dinner, yummy homemade chicken corn noodles soup and salad. The power came back on late in the afternoon but don't tell my boss. I did not log onto the computer until after 6! It was more fun enjoying the snow day!
